From Chang-Ho Chin (Also known as Chang-Ho Jihn), Director of BIG Data Laboratory:

I currently serve as Director of Healthcare Big Data Center at Kyung Hee University. I am a professor of the Department of Industrial Engineering and the Department of Software Convergence (by courtesy) at Kyung Hee University. I served as the department chair from 2008 to 2010 and from 2014 to 2015. I received my Ph.D. degree in Industrial Engineering from Texas A&M University, USA.

Since 2016, I have been engaged in research as a Visiting Scholar in the Department of Preventive Medicine at Northwestern University¡¯s Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, USA.

The research interest of BIG (Behavior/Intervention/Green) Data Laboratory is in discovering new insights by extracting and fitting together implicit, previously unknown and potentially useful pieces of information from big data. It especially focuses on issues at the convergence of engineering and humanities by mining and modeling ¡®mobile device sensed data¡¯ pertaining to human behavior and context, with the goal of identifying and predicting behavior pattern and personal relationship for providing practical insight in business and healthcare. Another research interest is in developing a general statistical framework for effectively and efficiently monitoring, diagnosing, and controlling variation in data-rich environments such as manufacturing and the healthcare and service industries, with the goal of improving process stability and capability for competitiveness for enterprises. The aforementioned research is accomplished with multidisciplinary engineering techno logies integrated with data mining, reality mining, statistics, social network analysis, cognitive science, and psychology.

My research has been supported by numerous industries and government agencies. I received the KIIE Academic-Industrial Cooperation Project Contest award in 2009, the KISE Best Research Award in 2005, the INFORMS Annual Conference Best Student Paper Competition finalist recognition in 2004, and the Korean Honor Scholarship in 1999.

[2019.02.08] Under supervision of Dr. Jihn, a term-project team won the grand prize in the KHU capstone design competition. They have developed a recommender system for choosing a graduate supervisor with using the topic modeling.   
[2019.01.07] BIG Data Lab started up two research groups for personal health record (PHR) analysis in collaboration with Dr. Shin working for college of medicine - Chungbuk National University and Seoul Asan Medical Center.   
[2019.01.01] Dr. Jihn's domestic patent has been succcessfully registered. It is about healthcare coaching based on mobile devices such as smartphone.   
[2019.01.01] Dr. Jihn has been appointed as a Big Data Division editor for Journal of Society of Korea Industrial and Systems Engineering.   
[2018.12.20] Dr. Jihn served as a Big Data Division chairman of the proposal review committee for Institute for Information & communications Technology Promotion (IITP).   
[2018.12.19] In Fall semester, 2018, Dr. Jihn have taught four courses such as Data Science, Quality Engineeirng, Industrial Data Analytics, and Capstone Design. He has earned an average course evaluation score of 95.5%.   
[2018.12.13] Under supervision of Dr. Jihn, two term-project teams won the grand prize and the second prize at the IE department academic festival.
